Two suspects with 73 warrants arrested
04 April 2022
The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments arrested 274 suspects and issued 46 699 fines during weekly enforcement operations. Traffic officers also arrested two suspects with 73 outstanding warrants between them.
Traffic officers arrested a suspect on Saturday, 2 April 2022 in the Melton Rose area with 33 warrants against his name, with a value of R117 000.
On Sunday, 3 April 2022, another suspect with 40 outstanding warrants to the value of R123 600 was arrested in the Blue Downs area.
During weekly patrols, officers also issued 40 678 fines and arrested 41 suspects for various road and vehicle safety transgressions. Of the arrests conducted, 27 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and 14 for reckless and negligent driving.
‘Motorists ignoring their fines and warrants is an ongoing problem, largely perpetuated by the notion that they will not get caught. In the last week, our traffic officers took nearly 1 500 motorists into custody for outstanding warrants, so hopefully that serves as a wake-up call to other scofflaws who clearly have no respect for traffic regulations and the rule of law. While some feign ignorance, the majority simply do not want to pay for their transgressions, and continue to transgress, in spite of the danger their actions pose to other road users. These arrests should act as a clear message to those who think they are above the law - we will catch up with you,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
METRO POLICE
Officers arrested 162 suspects and issued 3 407 fines during weekly enforcement operations. Of the successful arrests made, 20 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and 64 for the illegal possession of drugs.
On Friday, 1 April 2022, officers on patrol on the R300 noticed an unknown male suspect pointing a firearm at a member of the public. The officers chased the suspect on foot and apprehended him where they found him in possession of an imitation firearm. The officers arrested the 21-year-old on charges of armed robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.
Just 24 hours earlier, officers arrested a 27-year-old man in Philippi East for possession of an imitation firearm and suspected stolen goods.
